Mother’s Day weekend, May 8th marks the opening day of the Marché Samedi Sutton Saturday Market 2021 season. Our community market will mark its’ 51st season this year and we’ll be there to celebrate it! We had a challenging but wonderful 2020 season. There were many hurdles to overcome but our members and vendors worked hard to offer market goers a huge variety of goods in a safe and welcoming environment. What sets us apart from most other markets is that our vendors include artisans, antiques and books sellers. We have wood workers, knitters, upcycling artists, a print maker, mask makers, florists. And of course, many local farms offering their fabulous, varied selections of mostly organic vegetables, fruits, foraged wild edibles and well as some transformed products like honey, maple syrup, fermented foods, and more.
An educational / activity-based facet is planned this year. We would like to introduce people to some of the lesser-known seasonal vegetables and wild edibles. How to identify, prepare and cook some of these varieties and how to become a little more self-sufficient in these times of unreliable supply chains and global, climactic challenges. We would also like to offer market goers and vendors alike a more interesting array of healthy and delicious prepared foods.
The global pandemic has made people more aware of the origins of the foods they consume. Having reliable and sustainable local food sources are paramount. Attending a local market allows the market goer to meet and talk directly with the producers. It helps them acknowledge the hard work and skill that goes into farming, cheese making, charcuterie, etc. It’s crucial that the community supports these businesses.
The Sutton market provides a space to get people together. Thanks to a large terrain, we are able to offer a place for seasoned farmers, artisans as well as up-and-comers. For more information check out our Facebook page. Situated at 2 Curley Street, Sutton, the market will run until the end of October. It will be on every Saturday from 8a.m. until 1p.m., rain or shine. See you there!!
